Dr. Hui Su

I am now the Director of Cognitive and Immersive Systems Lab, a collaboration between IBM Research and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. I have been a technical leader and an executive at IBM Research. Most recently, I was the Director of IBM Cambridge Research Lab in Cambridge, MA and was responsible for a broad scope of global missions in IBM Research, including Cognitive User Experience, Center for Innovation in Visual Analytics and Center for Social Business.
As a technical leader and a researcher for 19 years at IBM Research, I have been an expert in multiple areas ranging from Human Computer Interaction, Cloud Computing, Visual Analytics, and Neural Network Algorithms for Image Recognition etc.
  • My research results in Human Computer Interaction have enabled a broad range of IBM products, including input methods to enable IBM Chinese WorkPads, Japanese continuous handwriting recognition for IBM TransNote, multimodal interaction middleware for Pervasive Computing offerings etc. The most recent work in Cambridge Lab in the area of Visual Analytics enables users to interactively explore complex data set and discover business insights. I also led the team develop the Cognitive Experience Lab in Cambridge to enable the multi-screen & multi-channel visualization, as well as the meeting room of the future.
  • Led a Software-as-a-Service research and Business Service Cloud in IBM China Research Lab and Watson Research Center from 2005 to 2012. The new technologies of this research work have enabled the business services offered by municipalities and business, and software-as-a-service platforms offered by major telecom providers.
  • I have 28 publications and 27 patents with 700 citations. The patents are not only used by IBM products, some of them have also been used by companies like Google, Lenovo, Nuance and Snapchat etc.
  • I have served in a few worldwide review committees to review senior technical staffs’ work, research project proposals and results, patent disclosures, conference and journal papers, etc.
  • I have played the leadership role in the development of service science in China and chaired the first International Conference of Service Science. I also developed curriculums for solution engineering and visual analytics and taught in Peking University and University of Connecticut.
As an executive, I have been leading research labs and research teams in US and China. I am passionate about game-changing ideas and fundamental research, passionate in speeding up the impact generation process for technical innovations, discovering and developing new linkages between innovative research work and business needs. This includes:
  • Establishing In-Market Research(IMR) approach to bring research work closer to business needs and impact.  IMR approach has been used in establishing a global social business innovation program in the context of Center for Social Business, for research teams to provide social business transformation technologies to more than 7 Fortune 500 enterprises and influenced dozens of million dollars business. I also played a leadership role in a multi-year IMR in Cloud Computing research from 2005 to 2012, in which a series of client engagements was conducted in US and China, to prove the technical innovation and business value in establishing business services and cloud platform.
  • Developing and maintaining good relationship with clients and academic institutes. The clients include those from various industries ranging from banking, healthcare, governments and telecom etc. I also established collaborative projects with academic institutes e.g. MIT, University of Connecticut, Peking Universities, and Tsinghua Universities etc.
  • Managing joint programs between development team and research team. This helped transferred a number of technologies in Research to products, ranging from social business technologies, cloud computing technologies, visual analytics technologies and personal computing technologies.
